Favourite Must Do Cape Experience: Stand Up Paddling on a lake atop the Table Mountain National Park. A surreal experience shared with baboons an array of bird life and a view of Table Mountain in the distance.

  • A born adventurer being bought up on an Outdoor education centre at the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga
  • As a ranger and accredited FGASA assessor and moderator Kirsten has trained some of South Africa’s top guides and trackers
  • Leaving his 4x4 behind Kirsten is an accomplished horseback safari guide and has guided all over South Africa and Botswana
  • Further afield Kirsten has been a surf Instructor and Horse Guide in Maui, Naturalist in Costa Rica and Dive Master on St Kitts
  • Africa is his chosen playground and he continues to pioneer his own adventures most recently a solo mountain bike expedition on the Mozambique coast

Pioneering Spirit: 
  • Marcus Phitides is a registered and accredited tour guide who is proudly South African and who is deeply passionate about the African continent’s natural beauty and its diverse people.
  • He relishes in people getting the most out of his incredible country and loves revealing to his guests the quirkier side of South Africa that only a knowledgeable local can provide.
  • After graduating from the University of Cape Town with a degree in Environmental Science and Sociology, he spent a number of years living, travelling and surfing extensively in the USA, UK, Africa and Asia.
  • His interests include a wide variety of subjects that span wildlife and conservation, history, adventure activities, wine and geography but his true love is the ocean.
  • When it comes to our Peninsula tour, he will share his love for and knowledge of the ocean with you and give you an appreciation for why they call it the Cape of Storms.

  • Growing up in the country, Ian has always enjoyed the great outdoors. After completing a Bachelor of Commerce at Stellenbosch University Ian headed to explore the world, skiing & snowboarding in the USA before doing a working stint in the UK.
  • Ian played international 7 aside Rugby for Germany before the entrepreneurial bug drew him back to Cape Town where he designed and built a 3D maze to educate kids about conservation.
  • As long as Ian can make a difference to the natural world and be able to share his passion and knowledge of the Mother City to anyone who is interested in exploring the waterways and untrodden trails – Ian is living his vocation!
Favourite Must Do Cape Experience: Table Mountain, no wait, supping, no, Cape Point, no, wine and seafood while watching the ocean, hang on, shark cage diving...or maybe zip lining... I can't quite decide...all of the above!

  • A born and bred ‘Capetonian Noordhoeker’, Matt has grown up surfing and hiking all over the Cape Peninsula.
  • Before and after studying at The International Cape Town Hotel School he has accumulated over 12years of hospitality experience and worked for some of the leading 5star hotels & restaurants in London, Denmark, Tanzania & Cape Town. He strives for that 5star experience in each and every one of Escape+Explores tours.
  • Avid wine lover, foody and trained chef as well as outdoor nature lover, he is continuously on the search for fun ways to incorporate all the Capes hidden gems together in an adventurous style.
  • Matt’s worked for one of South Africa’s leading private game reserves, one of the UK’s most successful high-end international luxury travel companies and now for Cape Town’s best adventure tour company, Escape+Explore.
  • When not in the office or out guiding Matt runs his own small little guest house in Noordhoek with his fiancé and 3 legged mascot dog, Django.

  • An off-shore saturation diver James has worked as a commercial diver all over Africa
  • Recognized as one of the top underwater cameramen in South Africa and pioneered Snorkelling with Seals in Cape Town.
  • On the water James has three decades of surfing and windsurfing under his belt and guided Stand Up Expeditions along Cape Towns coast line.
  • Born and Bred in Cape Town James knows the nooks and crannies of the city better than any one
Favourite Must Do Cape Experience: The freezing Atlantic ocean is full of revitalising energy – get into the ocean any way you can on a surfboard, SUP or snorkelling and bask in your glowing smile as you warm up and refuel with some hearty SA food.

Pioneering Spirit: 
  • After touring almost every inch of South Africa from a young age Robert gained his greatest passion for National Parks, wildlife & conservation. This passion never subsided & so Robbie went on to study Nature Conservation in Cape Town, whilst studying he also flew Helicopters in order to gain his Pilots License. 
  • Roberts adventurous spark ignited & every day became an adventurous one, you name it, he does it, Trail running, Mountain biking, adventure racing, Paddling, climbing & so on!
  • Roberts work has taken him all over Southern Africa on many different multi day excursions such as the Richtersveld Wildrun, Wildcoast Wildrun, Tour de Tuli, Cederberg Traverse.
  • Robert’s personal adventures have taken him all over too, from Cape Town to Durban on foot over 30 days, cycled from the north to the south of lake Malawi, cycled the entire Wildcoast & has countless ultra marathons under his belt.
  • When not exploring you will find Robert playing top league field hockey in Langa, a township hockey club in Cape Town.

Favourite Must Do Cape Experience: Trail running up Table Mountain on a path less traveled (unknown to most) in order to find snow on the rare occasion that it falls.

  • Di represented South Africa in World Marathon MTB Championships and if there’s a tough mountain bike race she’s done it including ABSA Cape Epic (8days), Cape Pioneer Trek (7 days)
  • A passionate chef of super healthy food and baked goodies many of which make their way on tour
  • When not guiding Di is a massage therapist to top athletes, celebrities and anyone who requires her healing touch
  • Recognising the Western Cape offers some of the World’s best mountain biking Di has focused on guided cycle tours around the mind blowing trails in the place she calls home
  • Leading the way Di heads up our exclusive mountain bike days for which we received Table Mountains first ever commercial mountain bike licence

Favourite Must Do Cape Experience: There are so many! Burning the trails on my bike in my favourite spots. Such as Welvanpas -Wellington, Tokai or Jonkershoek -Stellenbosch early in the morning when the air is fresh and cool. Then having a great meal at one of the many amazing restaurants on offer. 


Pioneering Spirit: 
  • Currently the 8 X South African Surf Champion and the first lady to achieve 4 back to back wins
  • Competed for 2 years on the ASP World Tour ranking amongst the top 20 surfers in the World whilst surfing every corner of the planet. 
  • Has lead 2 month long dedicated surf expeditions along the entire coastline of South Africa and through to Mozambique
  • Growing up in a hotel Nikita was quite literally born into hospitality

Pioneering Spirit:
  • Steffi loves her job, her passion! Since her earliest childhood she has been devoted to dance and movement.
  • In 2004 Steffi started Yoga and in 2009 she qualified as a teacher having been privileged to have learned from great teachers from all over the world.
  • As an addition to the 500hr Teacher Training Steffi joined the Personal training Yoga education to specialize in one on one training and Thai Yoga Massage and also qualified as a Supalamic trainer ( SUPYoga & SUPfitness training).
  • Steffi’s Yogastyle is an exciting and innovative style of Hatha Yoga. She creates an individual journey, she picks up the clients from where they are in a very professional way.
  • Steffi fell in love with Cape Town and moved to SA in 2011. She was the first person offering the combination of Yoga & Hikes on the mountains and offering SUPYoga in Cape Town. To become more knowledge about this beautiful country Steffi became a qualified tour guide in 2015 and leads tours with or without Yoga

Favourite Must Do Cape Experience: A really special experience is a fantastic Yoga & Hike up Table Mountain, with a Yoga session on top of the world, watching the sunset. Sunrise Yoga sessions on the beach are also a favorite of mine.

  • Pioneered the concept of running tourism in Cape Town after working as a running guide in Buenos Aires
  • Many hard miles have been run creating fascinating routes both urban and on mountain trails taking in Cape Town heritage and nature
  • Philippa’s pioneering approach has been recognised with numerous press mentions and tourism award nominations
  • A true linguist having lived in 9 different cities Philipa guides in 4 different languages and manages to find breath even when running up the steepest hills
  • When not running on some beautiful trail in Cape Town, Philippa is a Speech and Language Therapist working with children in mainstream & special schools

Favourite Must Do Cape Experience: Early morning trail run somewhere on the mountain, the Vlakkenberg trail above Hout Bay is a perfect option,  followed by a swim in the sea and a "lekker" coffee somewhere.

  • John spent 42 years working for the South African postal service working his way up from a postman to the transport controller for the Western Cape
  • Having seen dramatic changes in the political and social landscape of South Africa, John's grass roots insights into life in South Africa is fascinating
  • A dedicated family and community man with 2 children, 3 grandchildren as well as being a minister in the New Apostolic Church
  • Normally driving on our adventures he has himself cycled the entire garden route although by his own admission that was some time ago!
  • Rivals any of our adventure guides enthusiasm for his new found career

Pioneering Spirit: 
  • Django our 3 legged guide was rescued from harsh living conditions which resulted in the amputation of his front right leg.
  • This has not got the better of him and he is now the most enthusiastic of our guides. Django is often walking in the mountains, SUPing on quiet lakes or assisting in the office.
  • Django is always ready to tour with anyone wanting to feel like a true local whilst hiking the mountain paths of Table Mountain reserve.
  • Rather than hold him back Django always leads from the front and uses his 3 legs as a talking point to assure a conversation with even the most aloof of locals.

Our office based team lack none of the zest of the adventure of our guides. The lofty title ‘Adventure Architect’ is fully merited as this is a bunch of individuals driven to create truly unique African Adventures. Every adventure created is bespoke and most a first of their kind. Escape+Explore is breaking new ground on how we explore Africa.

Pioneering Spirit: 
  • Moved to Cape Town from England in 2003 Founding African Travel specialist To Escape To, Sports Escapes and Escape + Explore 
  • Follows his guides on crazy quests including 3 days running 100km’s through the Lesotho mountains and swimming and SUPing from Robben Island to the mainland
  • Started his career in travel as a windsurf, surfing, climbing, sailing and kayak instructor in Cornwall and Devon, England
  • Spent 3 years teaching windsurfing and sailing on the Mediterranean island of Corsica
  • The original jack of all trades master of none Ingram designs his Cape Adventures to capture the unending enthusiasm he has felt for the city since arriving

  • With eyes set to venturing Africa Millie snapped up the opportunity to work at  Kaya Mawa on Likoma Island, Malawi, a 5* paradise lodge only reachable in a toy sized plane or dugout boat.
  • Her next adventure took her to Cape Town for a 2 week holiday but never left, joining the team and becoming completely immersed in Cape Town living.
  • The term ‘Adventure Architect’ was created with Millie in mind. Rather than simply recreate the same adventure time and time again every trip she creates is completely bespoke down to the very last detail.
  • Millie is fast turning into an Adventurer in her own rights completing a number of firsts since joining Escape+Explore including surfing, Stand Up Paddling, scaling the tricky Inda Venster hike up Table Mountain and donning her first set of cycling lycra.

Pioneering Spirit: 
  • Zulu speaking originally from KwaZulu-Natal Georgie is very much the rock Escape+Explore has been built on
  • 7 years as a corporate lawyer in London, Georgie learnt the hard way how long hours and even longer winters make the allure of her continent such an appealing escape.
  • As a mother of three busy kiddies and an avid runner Georgie knows how important it is to be to find the balance between happy children and happy parents all wrapped up in the same family adventure.
  • From her legal days, Georgie has an eye for detail and her key role is to assure that every i is dotted and t crossed on our adventures.
  • Georgie is behind developing an Adventure Academy to assure the ongoing development and training of our guiding team.

Pioneering Spirit: 
  • Llauren has more travel experience than most with 15 years travelling and creating bespoke itineraries across the Africa continent
  • Taking charge of our longer adventures Llauren has an encyclopaedic knowledge of logistics needed to criss-cross Africa to assure borders never get in the way of any adventure.
  • Having grown up in KwaZulu-Natal she has called  Cape Town home for a number of years but shows an enthusiasm for the Capes hiking trails and wine farms like she only moved here yesterday
  • Llauren has inspired her young daughter to become a mini conservationist recently climbing Table Mountain to raise funds for Rhinos the first we are sure of many mini Escape+Explore fundraisers

  • Anoinette defines passion, determination and grit
  • Scuba Diver by the age of 16
  • NSRI Volunteer for close on a decade where she directly positively impacted many hair-raising rescue missions alongside her fellow crew
  • Joined our team after immersing herself in the vibrant eclectic Cape art scene most recently as GM of Africa Nova in the city.
  • Loves to travel and meet the destinations and places whether locally or abroad
  • Challenged herself to coxswain a 6.5 Meter Rib

Pioneering Spirit: 
  • A Chartered Accountant who joined Escape+Explore after retiring from a coporate life holiding a number of high profile accounting and management roles.
  • The ‘dark horse’ of the team Graham is far more than our ‘finance man’ and has completed 20 Two Ocean Ultra Marathons, 17 Comrade Ultra Marathons, the gruelling Puffer trail run and has lost count of the amount of Argus cycle tours he has completed.
  • Whilst surviving 17 years working in Johannesburg financial scene Graham visited all the major nature reserves in the Southern Africa and a wealth of knowledge for us all to tap into.
  • Graham honed a deep appreciation for wine and craft beer whilst running the finances for a leading wine company and this background assures drinks going out on our tour have passed his stringent taste testing!
  • Graham manages a group of around 15 Township based runners from Hout Bay. Nurturing some great talents with occasional wins and frequent podium finishes in local and national races.
