Named after the railway line that snaked through the the Mpumalanga Lowveld carrying gold from Phalaborwa to Lourenço Marques in Moçambique at the end of the 19th centruy, Selati is a traditional safari experience reminiscent of a bygone era. This intimate camp has only 8 suites and each one has been named after long-gone railway stations. “Out of Africa” styling, newly renovated en-suite bathrooms, private viewing decks and cleverly concealed air-conditioning and electricity maintain the historical theme. Nights at Selati are illuminated by the gentle glow of authentic shunters’ lamps and lanterns. The cosy lounge is filled with reminders of times gone by, while dinners in the outdoor boma under the star-studded African sky or in the intimate “Farmhouse Kitchen” are delicious. Armchairs around the pool or on the covered wooden viewing decks are a perfect perch from which to watch game drinking at the nearby waterhole.
