Vamizi Island Lodge, Quirimbas Archipelago : Overview

Overview

Vamizi Island is owned by Maluane, a project committed to preserving this unique area of Northern Mozambique through carefully planned and exclusive tourism. Previously hidden from the outside world, Vamizi is quietly opening itself up to be explored for the first time. The exquisite lodge has been created so a handful of guests can step out of 13 beautifully appointed private beach houses into a paradise of powder sands, virginal reefs and secret coves. 2 shaded dhows anchored off some of the best snorkeling spots drop off guests, with no more than a generous picnic and radio, for idyllic memories of  privacy and isolation.

Vamizi`s location is unique; the island is situated right at the point where south equatorial current splits - heading north to Tanzania, and south towards the eastern coastline of South Africa. These currents contain large resources of microscopic plankton and krill, a major food source which supports the vast array of species found within the coral reef system; tuna, grey reef sharks and turtles amongst many others. Furthermore the corals on Vamizi`s dramatic drop- offs (unlike most of the world tropical reefs) have not been bleached by the global rise in sea temperatures and make up among the healthiest and most pristine reef-systems you can see anywhere. The waters around Vamizi Island are so special that one of their dives sites, Neptune`s Arm, has been voted one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. There are fifteen main dive sites around Vamizi Island, with more being discovered all the time, catering for all diving abilities, from the novice to experienced divers and the lodge has a fully equipped PADI dive centre. Although the diving at Vamizi is exceptional all year round the best time of year is September to November, when the sea is calmer, the ocean currents are not as strong and the water temperature is a pleasant 26 to 28 ºC.
